"Cleveringa Lecture" in Cooperation with Leiden University and the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands

On November 29, 2023, a public lecture commemorating Leiden University Professor Rudolph Cleveringa took place at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University (TSU). The event was organized in collaboration with the TSU Faculty of Law, Leiden University, and the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

The public lecture commenced with opening remarks from TSU Deputy Rector Erekle Astakhishvili, TSU Faculty of Law Deputy Dean Associate Professor Giorgi Dgebuadze; and Deputy Ambassador of the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Georgia Maurice Paulussen.

Professor Luc Verheij from Leiden University, specializing in constitutional and administrative law, delivered the public lecture. With a background as an assistant professor at Erasmus University Rotterdam and Utrecht University, he also served as a lawyer in the legislative department of the Ministry of Justice. Later, he took on roles as an advisor and became a member of the advisory department of the State Council.

It is important to note that, supported by the Leiden University Foundation, the "Cleveringa Lectures" honoring Professor Rudolph Cleveringa occur annually worldwide. In 2023, Georgia joined this global initiative, focusing on personal data protection. Professor Luc Verheij discussed the application of data protection rules; and addressed legislative changes the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) has brought since it entered into force in 2018, and its implications for Georgia.

The public lecture was attended by representatives of the Personal Data Protection Service, the university’s academic staff, and students.
